Polaris ProStar Engines

The entire 2015 lineup of Polaris ORV (Ranger, RZR, Sportsman, and ACE) are now all powered by ProStar engines. In the past, Polaris partnered with other manufacturers (Robin/Fuji industries was one) to provide engines for their ATV’s and UTVs. Polaris’ explosive growth over the last decade deemed it necessary for the company to begin to develop purpose built 4-stroke engines for the ORV lineup.

Some of the first ORVs to utilize a ProStar engine were the Sportsman 550 and 850s. These were quickly followed up with the 570cc engine used in the RZR 570. While that single cylinder engine was 210cc smaller than the 760cc parallel twin engine in that year’s Ranger XP 800, it produced similar peak HP.  The 570 engine was soon followed up with an 875cc in the RZR XP 900, and then a 999cc engine in the RZR XP 1000. In 2014 we also saw the release of a single cylinder 325cc engine in the Sportsman ACE.

The key components of ProStar engines

  • Overhead cams
  • Fuel injection
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Reduced maintenance costs and easy access to maintenance areas (oil check, oil filter, etc)
  • Increased engine longevity and reliability
  • Light weight
  • Compact design
  • Excellent power characteristics

Polaris has different product pages with details on each engine class. For more information on ProStar engines click on the links below

While similar engines may be used across the different product classes (ATV, Ranger, RZR) the power characteristics can be adjusted to fit the intended use. For instance, the ProStar 570 engine used in a RZR can be tuned for peak horsepower, while the same engine when used in a Ranger can be tuned for a flat torque curve and more low end power.

ProStar engines have proven to be extremely reliable, as long as they are properly maintained. Over the coming years, we expect to see the availability of additional ProStar engines to power whole new lines of ORV vehicles.
